Insurance operations guide

How to compare business insurance proposals clearly

Educational information only. Confirm coverage, compliance, legal, and financial decisions with the appropriate licensed professional.

Define the question before requesting proposals

Write down the operations, locations, vehicles, contracts, and loss information the market should be evaluating. If two proposals start from different facts, the price comparison may not be meaningful.

Build a side-by-side evidence set

  • Named insureds and covered operations
  • Effective dates and policy term
  • Limits, sublimits, deductibles, and retentions
  • Material exclusions and endorsements
  • Carrier and market information supplied by the broker
  • Payment terms and any premium-finance conditions

Mark what is not comparable

A lower premium can reflect a different limit, deductible, form, exclusion, or insured value. Flag those differences instead of forcing every proposal into one score.

Record the recommendation and authority

The final record should show which sources were reviewed, which tradeoffs mattered, and who approved the decision. Binding and coverage interpretation remain with the authorized brokerage, carrier, and licensed professionals involved.
